Size effects in adhesive contacts of viscoelastic media

چکیده
Is the maximum force required to detach a rigid sphere from viscoelastic substrate dependent on initial value of contact radius? Experimental and theoretical investigations reported in literature have given opposite responses. Here, we try answer above question by exploiting fully deterministic model which adhesive interactions are described Lennard-Jones potential behaviour with standard linear solid model. When approach retraction phases performed under quasi-static conditions, behaves as an elastic medium and, expected, pull-off Fpo (i.e., tensile force) is found be independent radius amax reached at end loading. Size-dependent effects instead observed changes amax) when transient occur larger area, greater size bulk volume involved dissipation. Results also discussed light crack Persson's theory, modified capture related amax.

Adhesive interactions of viscoelastic spheres
We develop an analytical theory of adhesive interaction of viscoelastic spheres in quasistatic approximation. Deformations and deformation rates are assumed to be small, which allows for the application of the Hertz contact theory, modified to account for viscoelastic forces. The adhesion interactions are described by the Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts theory. Using the quasistatic approximation...
متن کاملGeometry Effects at Atomic-size Aluminium Contacts
We present electronic structure calculations for aluminium nanocontacts. Addressing the neck of the contact, we compare characteristic geometries to investigate the effects of the local aluminium coordination on the electronic states. We find that the Al 3pz states are very sensitive against modifications of the orbital overlap, which has serious consequences for the transport properties. Stret...
متن کامل“dynamics of Viscoelastic Anisotropic Media”
New principles are introduced for the formulation of dynamic problems in viscoelasticity for the most general case of anisotropy. One is a variational principle derived from irreversible thermodynamics. The other a correspondence principle between viscoelasticity and elasticity. Applications to the mmics of viscoelastic plates and rods are developed as examples. The variational principles are a...
متن کاملTheory of swimming filaments in viscoelastic media.
Motivated by our desire to understand the biophysical mechanisms underlying the swimming of sperm in the non-Newtonian fluids of the female mammalian reproductive tract, we examine the swimming of filaments in the nonlinear viscoelastic upper convected Maxwell model. We obtain the swimming velocity and hydrodynamic force exerted on an infinitely long cylinder with prescribed beating pattern. We...
